Welcome to Year 1
Year One comprises of a large team of teachers, teaching assistants and other support staff. We are organised into four mixed ability classes and are proud to be a large and happy year group family.

Our aim is to continue to build on and enhance the strong foundations that the children have been provided with in the Early Years Foundation Stage. We recognise that all children should be provided with learning opportunities that will enable them to reach their full potential. To achieve this we ensure that all learning is matched to children’s individual needs and work closely with parents and outside agencies to enable us to do so.
Our children are happy and enthusiastic, embracing the varied opportunities provided for them. We encourage the children to be independent, resilient and respectful learners, who live out our school mission statement; Loving, Learning and Growing together with Jesus.
Year 1 Curriculum Overviews
The children in Year 1 follow the National Curriculum (https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/national-curriculum) as prescribed by the Government. All children are taught the core subjects of English, mathematics and science through discrete, timetabled lessons. These lessons follow the Programme of Study for Year 1 and expose all children to the specific, statutory requirements. We recognise that all children learn in different ways and they make progress at their own individual rate and so all work is carefully matched to specific needs and abilities.
English learning is divided into spoken language, reading, writing and spelling and grammar. We follow the curriculum for Year 1 and base learning around quality texts which allow the children to explore a variety of writing genres whilst becoming more familiar with a range of popular stories and poems.
During mathematics lessons there is an increased emphasis upon applying taught skills through problem solving using both practical and written methods. Deeper learning is a key element of this curriculum.
The foundation subjects of art and design, design and technology, geography and history are taught through topics.
Music, Computing and Physical Education are taught through discrete lessons that may be linked to the topic area but are often skill based. In PE lessons, the children will develop their skills through games, dance and gymnastics. Mr Morton supports us in our PE lessons.
During lunch times the children are encouraged to explore and invent through use of our carefully resourced Scrap Store Play Pods. This play develops cooperation, problem solving and imaginative play. See more information on www.playpods.co.uk.
